I Need Help — What Now?
First step – Call for help at 1-866-234-4857. You will be connected with a HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency.

Your call will be answered Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you call outside those hours, please leave your name and number. Your call will promptly be returned during business hours.

When you meet with your counselor, please try to bring the information in the list below. Please keep your appointment with your counselor even if you do not have all the documents. Your counselor can help you request some of the loan information from the mortgage company, if necessary:
  • Your loan note
  • Truth-in-lending disclosure
  • Loan application
  • Settlement statement (or “Hud-1”) received at loan closing
  • Good Faith Estimate
  • Deed of trust
  • Most recent mortgage statement
  • Any correspondence with your mortgage company or the foreclosure attorney
  • List of other debts and household expenses
  • 2 most recent months pay stubs for household members whose income helps pay the mortgage. (If self-employed, also bring a year-to-date profit and loss statement)
  • Benefit statements from Social Security, disability, unemployment, retirement or public assistance
  • Tax returns for the 2 most recent years
  • Copies of the most recent bank statements (all accounts)

In the event you receive foreclosure papers, you may wish to contact an attorney. Free legal services may be available to you. The following organizations may be able to help: Legal Aid of North Carolina, The North Carolina Justice Center, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont, and the Land Loss Prevention Project. You may also consider consulting with a bankruptcy attorney. The National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Lawyers may be able to refer you to a bankruptcy attorney in your area.
